The course is given by Dr. Alexander Schiller and Dr. Daniel Mertens.

Scientific competence of Ph.D. students is developed on their own research projects. However, while working hard on scientific output keeping an eye also on good com-munication within the supervisor and the group is sometimes difficult. It is important to realize that Ph.D. students should always try to improve their communication skills, understand group dynamics and conflicts and know how to use negotiation skills in order to deliver a successful performance.
AIM - To provide Ph.D. students at Göttingen Graduate School of the Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences with an opportunity to build their understanding, skills and confidence in nego-tiating and communication with their supervisor, their colleagues and peers. This will enhance their overall effectiveness as they pursue their research studies and maximize success of their future careers.
The highly interactive workshop trains participants to:
- Adopt a mindset that is self-aware and sensitive to diverse people in various settings
- Consider alternative perspectives from differing views (from supervisor, coworkers, etc.)
- Apply sound conflict analysis models, tools and processes
- Understand system dynamics and complexity of issues and actors
- Develop a reflective practice of learning
- Work toward reaching constructive outcomes through the use of collaborative processes in sci-ence
- Use theory to inform their understanding, and apply pragmatic approaches to resolving conflicts in research
