This module engages with the phenomenon of "ethnically divided" cities to enquire critically into the historical, political, and legal reasons that transform cities, after violent conflicts, into segregated environments. It will enquire into how religious, cultural and political actors - at the local and international levels - operate in the aftermath of ethnic wars and the roles they play in the process of transitioning from conflict to peace. This module integrates theoretical approaches and empirical case studies to test and challenge ideas and historical experiences - thus providing dynamic and complex readings of urban/national conflicts in Europe. Taking into closer account two of the most discussed examples of "divided cities", Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the module will interrogate practices of post-war reconciliation, cultural and creative aspects of conflict transformation and social justice together with their socio-legal, institutional and inter- state contexts. Students will analyse characteristics of urban violence, its causes and effects, explore how people cope with the everyday experience of urban conflict and ethnic polarisation in cities, and it will reflect on the potential and shortcoming of measures that have been taken to settle ethnic conflicts in these cities. Further, this module will question and challenge the methodological choices made by scholars engaged in critical research in ethnically divided cities and it will propose new approaches for the study of "divided cities".

The course will consist of required readings, student presentations, and class discussions. Readings are selected to cover a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of "divided cities". Students are expected to come to class having read all required materials and being prepared to engage in class discussions.
