The course is given by PD Dr. Alexander Schiller, Schiller & Mertens, Jena.

IMPORTANT: the main focus of this course are applications in academia. If you are interested in a more general course with a focus on applications outside of academia, please choose another course!

This workshop aims to provide late-stage PhD students at GGNB with an opportunity to build their understanding, skills and confidence in producing their application documents and performing well in job interviews in- and outside of academia.

The following topics will be covered:

* Personal Development Plan: SMART goals for the career
* Mentorship in the application process
* Identifying the position to apply
* Strategy for the application process: where, when and how
* Job announcements and non-advertised positions (academia and industry)
* How to find a postdoc position in USA, UK and Japan/China
* Stipends and Fellowships (e.g. DFG, ...)
* The application documents
* CV optimization
* Interviewing, typical situations and questions and answers
* Key message and pitch of the research
