Construction and Phenotyping of Engineered Heart Muscle

After a short introduction into tissue engineering and cell culture techniques, students will together with the supervisor construct engineered heart muscle (EHM; Tiburcy et al. 2017 - time: 4 h). Tissue formation will be monitored every second week day (time: 15 min/day) together with the supervisor for a period of 4 weeks. Phenotyping by isometric force of contraction measurements will be performed (6 h).

Methods (supervisor in brackets):

* Cardiomyocyte and fibroblast preparation from human induced pluripotent stem cells (Technical Staff)
* Tissue engineering - 48 EHM in recently developed 48 well format (Liaw)
* Video-optic monitoring of tissue formation and function (Meyer)
* Isometric force measurement (Liaw/Tiburcy)

Further processing of EHM for immune fluorescence analyses, transcriptome and proteome studies as well as electrophysiological assessments can be offered according to the availability of the respective supervisors - students are encouraged to discuss with supervisor.

Costs: €1.500 (Material costs for 48 EHM tissue engineering and culture) to be covered by the Departement of the participants!

Students are encouraged to come back to the lab every second day for a time frame of 4 weeks (15 min/day according to supervisors availabiulity) to learn about the progress of tissue formation.
