Introduction to 3D printing: macro and micro scale
Lecturer:
Dr. Jan Molacek
Course typ:
Blockveranstaltung
Description:
The course will be given by

Johannes Guettler: Johannes.guettler@ds.mpg

Antonio Ibanez: Antonio.ibanez@ds.mpg.de

3D printing enables very fast prototyping and can be a valuable tool when working in a research environment as it excels at creating unique structures, typically in low numbers. This course aims to give an overview of the existing methods, the steps involved in creating a 3D model, and will let the students use two different 3D printers. The first printer is an Ultimaker 2+ which is representative of a hobbiest-level 3D printer while the second printer is a Nanoscribe GT which uses two photon beams to polymerize a photoresist and can print with a precision down to 150 nanometers. The course covers the following topics:

 Introduction

* Common types of  3D printers
* Ultimaker 2+: overview and design recommendations
* Nanoscribe GT: overview and design recommendations

3D-modelling: creating a STL file

* Introduction to Computer Aided Design (CAD) on the example of Solid Edge 10
* Creating a STL file with Matlab

Practicals

* 3D printing with the Ultimaker 2+
* 3D printing with the Nanoscribe GT. Note: this will be done in clean room of the MPI DS. A short clean room introduction will be provided.
