Structured approaches to analyze large quantities of experimental data: Relational Databases and Structured Query Language (SQL)
Lecturer:
Prof. Dr. Nicola Strenzke
Course typ:
Blockveranstaltung
Description:
Summary:

Many experimental approaches generate large quantities of data which need to be stored and analyzed systematically. A relational database is an extremely useful tool to organize data in a structured arrangement of tables, which can be interconnected based on data attributes. Standardized queries can then be used to extract data to rapidly plot or analyze them statistically with varying settings.

This course is meant to teach the basics of working with relational databases. It will cover all steps from designing, creating, and working with a relational database with hands-on exercises and examples from the field of auditory neuroscience.

No previous knowledge is required, but it will be helpful to know some basics in Python or Matlab programming, as the course will cover the Matlab and Python capabilities to communicate with a relational database. You are welcome to bring own data samples and ideas for discussion how to best organize them.

Contents:

-       Conception of a Database with the ER-Model (Entity-Relationship-Model)

-       Presentation of different Database management systems (Access, MySQL)

-       Basics in SQL (structured query language)

-       Implementing a Database using python (pypyodbc package) and Matlab

-       Examples for the use of Databases in the field of auditory neuroscience

-       An alternative approach: systematic use of Excel and Matlab

Practice:

-       Conception, generation and use of an example Database
