| Description: |
| After the economic crash in 2008, the Irish literary scene has developed a tremendous boom, leaving, according to The Guardian, "the conservative writing of the Celtic Tiger years - all nostalgia and sexual repression - behind". This course will explore the diversity and superb, poetical styles of the new wave of recent Irish fiction by women, identify current themes, analyse stylistic features and contextualise the chosen novels within the political history and tradition of Irish literature. Trigger warning: Some texts address Ireland’s darkest issues: domestic violence, political violence, sexual abuse and the social oppression of women. This is a reading-intense class and students are expected to read all five novels and selected secondary texts. Reading: Anne Enright,The Gathering(2007); Claire Keegan,Small Things Like These(2021);Louise O’Neill,Asking for it(2015); Anna Burns,Milkman(2018); Kerri ní Dochartaigh,Thin Places(2021). |
