Tumor Genetics
Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar (Lehre)
Beschreibung: The role of cancer in medicine is of steadily increasing significance. About 25-30% of individuals die following cancer development and progression. What do we currently know about cancer development and its genetic aspects? How can we use the knowledge about the genetic basis underlying cancer for prognostic conclusions and how can this knowledge contribute to success in cancer therapy?

With these and other questions participants of the seminar will be concerned with. In presentations based on current publications, the role of chromosomal aberrations, oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes will be discussed. Approaches in somatic gene therapy and the possibility to set up a reasonable therapy will be included. Relevant techniques in cytogenetics and molecular genetics will be introduced in the course of the presentations.

The seminar is intended for students of biology and those of Molecular Medicine with basic knowledge in molecular genetics (e.g. former participation of the lecture "Humangenetik für Biologen") who are interested in the discussion of these questions.
