Research interests
The focus of my research group lies in Probability theory and its applications. We are especially interested in probability models, stochastic processes and random structures, in particular random trees and graphs,  that describe the evolution of interacting particle systems and population models forward and backward in time. Many of these models have implications for the applied sciences, especially for Biology and Physics. A particular interest has been on models in (population) genetics and ecology.
  • Branching and interacting particle systems
  • Random graphs and structures
  • Markov processes with general state spaces
  • Stochastic (partial) differential equations
  • Coalescent processes
  • Limit theorems

We are also interested in related questions in Mathematical Statistics, in particular statistical inference and asymptotic statistic. Another recent focus includes questions in stochastic optimization and algorithms.

Curriculum Vitae
Anja Sturm studied Mathematics and Physics at the University of Tübingen earning a prediploma (Vordiplom) in both subjects. She then received a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from the University of Washington (U.S.A.) in 1998 and her DPhil from the University of Oxford (U.K.) in 2002, where she was supported by a Rhodes Scholarship and an EPSRC award. For her thesis she was awarded the Corcoran prize of the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford.

She then took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the Weierstrass Institute of Applied Mathematics and Stochastics in Berlin and at the University of British Columbia (Canada), Vancouver, as well as a Junior Professorship of Applied Probability at the Technical University Berlin and subsequently an Assistant Professorship at the University of Delaware (U.S.A.).

Anja Sturm joined the University of Göttingen in 2009 as a Professor for for Stochastics and its Applications (W2 2009-2016, W3 2016-present).
