RESEARCH INTEREST
Global change research, investigating the impacts of climate- and land-use change on terrestrial ecosystems, is the most important task in my scientific work. In the long-term Giessen-FACE-Experiment and Giessen-T-FACE-Experiment I want to focus on above- and belowground interactions of herbaceous species under elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature in the FACE2FACE project in cooperation with a new FACE facility at the University Geisenheim. The interaction of plants and microbes in the phyllosphere and the rhizosphere are also important research issues to evaluate and explain changes of the ecosystem greenhouse gas balance and plant health.
In collaboration with the University College Dublin the impacts of historic and recent land-use change of temperate peatlands on the ecosystem greenhouse gas balance and the biodiversity is another research focus.
In past projects my research focussed on carbon partitioning in above- and belowground compartments of tropical forests under climate change. Drought periods in SE-Asia caused by the "El Nino Southern Oscillation" (ENSO) are included in the list of tipping points of earth´s climate under a progressive global warming. In the "Sulawesi Throughfall Displacement Experiment" I study effects of experimentally induced-droughts on the net primary production and the above-/belowground carbon partitioning in a tropical rainforest and a cacao agroforestry system with special focus on the vitality and activity of tree fine roots.
Elevation effects on key processes of the carbon cycle of tropical rainforests were the main objective in my PhD-thesis. The temperature and soil moisture gradient provoke a growing importance and altered dynamic of the fine root system from lower to upper montane rainforests (elfin forests), which is responsible for large and obvious changes in aboveground structure and carbon allocation, allowing insights in probable ecosystem changes during a continued climate change.
The alpine vegetation from the tropics to the arctic zone is another habitat I am interested in. In the temperate and boreal zone of Europe I have studied the alpine vegetation for my diploma-thesis revealing interesting biogeographic similarities and differnces. The alpin zone in the Ecuadorian Andes, on the Canary Islands, Iceland and in Spitzbergen I have visited during excursions.
PROJECTS
Giessen T-FACE
For the first time a direct Air Temperature Warming to +2°C above ambient is combined with a Free Air CO2Enrichment. A new technique has been developed with air heating elements positioned in a ring construction with a diameter of 4.3 m that are controlled by wind direction and wind speed. In 2013 the investigation of the soil conditions, plant community and greenhouse gas fluxes of 15 circular plots started. In 2014 a long list of sensors was installed in the plots and the installation of the Thermo-FACE facility began. There are three repetitions of the treatments 1) air heating and ambient CO2, 2) air heating and CO2 enrichment, 3) ambient air temperature and CO2 enrichment, 4) ambient air temperature and ambient CO2 with the ring construction, 5) ambient air temperature and ambient CO2 without the ring construction. Since 2017 test runs of the air temperature heating +2°C and the +20% CO2 enrichment started and were used to increase the systems performance. 2018 is the first year where all treatments and rings are active during the entire vegetation growth period.
FACE2FACE
The cooperation of the Giessen FACE facility in a permanent temperate grassland, which is active since 1998, the construction of a new Thermo-FACE nearby and two new FACE facilities at the Geisenheim University for wine and vegetable FACE2FACE forms a Hessian research platform on climate change effects on agroecosystems. Coordinating and contributing to the research proposal and the planning of the field instrumentation, I am associated to the subproject A1 – Influence of elevated CO2 and temperature on trace gas emissions. Additionally I am interested in belowground root dynamics and its role on C and N fluxes of the grassland ecosystem.
15N-FACE: The effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration on growth nitrogen transformations, plant N-uptake at microbial community dynamics in a permanent grassland.
To predict ecosystem reactions to elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) it is essential to understand the interactions between plant carbon input, microbial community composition and activity and associated nutrient dynamics. The overall goal of this 15N-FACE study is to understand the long-term effects of eCO2 and carbon input on microbial community composition and activity as well as the associated nitrogen dynamics, N2O production a1nd plant N uptake in the Giessen FACE study on permanent grassland. A combination of 13CO2 pulse labelling with 15N tracing of 15NH4+ and 15NO3- will be carried out in situ. Gross N transformation rates, pool size dependent N2O and N2 emissions as well as N species dependent plant N uptake rates and the origin of the CO2 respiration will be quantified. Microbial analyses associated with the turnover of NH4+, NO3-, N2O and N2, based on mRNA are employed to comparably evaluate the long-term effects of eCO2 on the structure and abundance of these communities, while transcripts of these genes will be used to target the fractions of the communities which actively contribute to N transformations.
STORMA - Sulawesi Throughfall Displacement Experiment
In the "Sulawesi Throughfall Displacement Experiment" I coordinate on the one hand the setup of each three control and desiccation plots, including the construction and mantainance of each three subcanopy desiccation roofs in a primary forest (40 x 40 m) and a cacao agroforest (35. x 40 m) to simulated ENSO-related drought periods. On the other hand I coordinate the investigations of six research groups, all part of the interdisciplinary DFG research cluster "Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia - STORMA" , studying the soil water pool, nutrient availability, litter decay and soil respiration, and physiological drought effects on trees (e.g. xylem flux and water potential), reactions in carbon allocation and above- and belowground primary production. My own scientific interest focusses on the drought effects on vitality and activity of tree fine roots in natural forest and agroforestry systems (Subproject C4)
Functionality in a Tropical Mountain Rainforest
Within the former DFG (Research Unit 402) "Functionality in a Tropical Mountain Rainforest" I studied the elevation effects on key processes of carbon cycling in South Ecuadorian mountain forests during my PhD-research in an unique mountain rainforest in the Podocarpus National Park and the adjacent Reserva Biológica San Francisco. Based on the results a fertilization experiment started in 2007 to differentiate the effects of elevation, temperature and soil moisture from limitations in nutrient availability (Research Unit 812)
